Why should I update my Agent Query profile? I’m already too swamped with queries. Won’t this just make it worse?

There are so many bad guides and bad cyber information floating around that writers don’t know what sources to trust. For this reason, they often utilize the “Hail Mary” submission technique: send a bunch of queries out into the netherworld and maybe something will stick. Guess whose slush pile grows exponentially? Yours.

That’s the reason you’re soooooooo swamped with inappropriate queries—writers are offering you their sci-fi novel, even though you only sell nonfiction. Okay, it's true. Some apathetic writers will never do their homework, no matter what great website offers them all the proper information on a silver platter. But the majority of writers are well-meaning. They want to query the proper literary agents about their book. But instead, they’re floundering around in the dark, using last year's 1000-page generic bible-sized "literary agent" guide, trying to find a needle in a haystack. And writers will send their needle into your haystack if they think there’s a chance, no matter how microscopic, that you might be the one perfect agent for their book.

That’s why you should update your Agent Query profile. Our searchable database pulls up your name only when it fits a user’s search. If you only sell nonfiction, chick lit writers searching for literary agents will never see your profile. Only interested in women’s fiction and romance? Your profile won’t come up when writers search for agents representing thrillers and mysteries. We believe writers wouldn’t “Hail Mary” query if they knew exactly which genres each literary agent represented. Updating your profile on Agent Query streamlines the whole process by helping writers target the right agents and avoid the wrong ones.
